The 1851 Navy Engraved Black Powder Revolver in 44 Caliber with Brass Frame, Walnut Grip, and 7.5 Inch Blued Octagonal Barrel was an often relied upon side arm during the Civil War by Union Army soldiers for short range and close quarters combat. Its high capacity of the times allowed for several rounds per minute to be fired before having to reload. Though typically issued to officers or mounted soldiers, some were purchased privately or found on the battlefield. The 1851 Navy is considered to be one of Wild Bill Hickok’s favorite handguns.
